John was able to move his jaw slightly today, confirming that yesterday was not a one-day event. After nearly six weeks, this is the first positive sign we have seen, and it truly feels like a small miracle.
The day itself was difficult. A test indicated internal bleeding, and tomorrow doctors will perform a scope procedure to try to identify the source.
John remains on full ventilation. Unlike most ventilated patients, his lungs are not the issue. He has bilateral diaphragmatic paralysis, meaning the muscles and nerves that normally allow the lungs to work are not functioning, so weening is not effective yet. The palliative care doctor explained that he will likely need full ventilation until the paralysis resolves, which could take months or longer. Ventilation unfortunately comes with significant challenges.
The palliative care doctor also stated how critical sleep is for healing. In the hospital, John is awakened frequently around the clock, which makes deep, restorative rest very difficult. Visitors help his mental and emotional well-being at the time, but visits can interrupt his ability to rest and recover. We all want John to recover.
DO NOT PLAN A VISIT WITHOUT CONTACTING ME FIRST PLEASE.
Although John is still very fragile, his stay at Kindred will be ending soon, and we are now working to identify the next hospital that can accept a fully ventilated patient.
Please continue to pray for John’s recovery. Your support, love, and understanding mean more than we can express.
